12 Idols Who Had Their Hearts Broken And Shared Their Stories

Even idols experience heartbreak.

Most idols are intensely private people, rarely speaking up about the hard times in their life – but some have openly admitted when they were heartbroken in the past, either by a past lover, friend or situation. These idols are trusting the public by confessing their true feelings to the world about how they dealt with the hard times.

1. Minhyuk (BTOB)

Minhyuk admitted he had a one-sided love for years; he persisted for four before finally dating her, but still ended up heartbroken. “I even confessed to her five times. When she was twenty-years-old, she accepted my feelings and I succeeded in dating her.” It felt like a one-sided love even while they were dating, so he had a rough time and eventually they split up.

2. Henry (former Super Junior member)

Henry revealed on Real Men in 2014 that he hadn’t dated for nine years because of past heartache. When he talked about his ex-girlfriend whom he dated for seven hears in Canada, the other members asked Henry to make a video message, but Henry refused, saying they ended their relationship on a bad note.

“Right now, I don’t have a girlfriend. I had an ex-girlfriend whom I dated for seven years in Canada, though. The girl cheated on me…with my best friend.” — Henry

3. Yoo Seung Ho

Yoo Seung Ho admitted when he spoke about his role in Missing You that he was similar to his character, in that there is no limit to how well he treats the woman he loves. He recounted a past situation… and his tone suggested maybe he is still a bit bitter about it!

“Relationships didn’t work out so well for me. There was someone I liked during my school days so I wanted to be extra good to her. But because we were seniors in high school when everyone was in a sensitive state, we were never able to date. I’m fine now. I’ve forgotten about it. She’s currently doing well with a different cool boyfriend.” — Yoo Seung Ho

4. Jessica Jung (former Girls’ Generation member)

When Jessica left Girls’ Generation in 2014, fans were heartbroken – and the members have spoken up about the difficulties of continuing on without Jessica. But Jessica’s own statement at the time – which contradicted SM Entertainment‘s official statement about her departure – conveyed the heartbreak she felt at being asked to leave Girls’ Generation not only by her agency but, according to her, her fellow members.

“I have received great pain and cannot hide my sadness that I was asked by the agency and fellow members, whom I’ve spent 15 years with putting in all my passion and effort, to leave Girls’ Generation just because of the reason that I’m starting a business. I also want to apologize for causing concern to all the fans. Please understand that this situation is not at all what I had wanted, and that I’ve always treasured Girls’ Generation, and that I will continue to do so. Thank you for always supporting and loving me.” — Jessica

5.  Choi Jiwoo

After dating fellow actor Lee Jinwook for three years, breaking up in 2010 due to the strain of being in the spotlight, the Winter Sonata actress told SBS‘s Healing Camp in 2011 that she was lonely.

“I’m very lonely these days and want to be in love. I don’t mind if the guy works in the entertainment industry, but I never want to go public with my relationship again.” — Choi Jiwoo

6. Jang Na Ra

Baby Faced Beauty actress Jang Nara admitted in 2012 that her farewell kiss with an ex-boyfriend kept him in her mind for quite a while. On SBS‘s Strong Heart, Jang Nara said that she regrets the way they ended things. “Instead of saying our farewells to each other, my ex-boyfriend and I locked lips when we broke up. I regret it since it makes me think of him more often.”

7. Baekhyun (EXO)

After his public breakup with Girls’ Generation member Taeyeon in 2015, it seems Baekhyun is still sensitive about dating. On an episode of Knowing Bros in 2017, every time the cast members started talking about girlfriends, Baekhyun’s facial expression showed his discomfort. He even said: “I’m not comfortable for now with that issue.” While it was part of a joke, he added: “You surprised me. I’m sensitive about issues like that,” and his fellow EXO members added, “We were shocked too.”

8. Baek A Yeon

Baek A Yeon‘s self-written song “Shouldn’t Have” was inspired by her real-life breakup. She said: “I wrote what actually happened to me in the lyrics. I had to write a song just at the time, and something exactly like the lyrics had occurred to me. I was really shocked and I cried while writing it.”

9. D.O (EXO)

D.O. has spoken up about his first love and how it was very different from a happy love story.

“I remember it being a depressing and sad love. I was too obsessed. I learned that if you obsess over someone, it will make them stop caring about you.” — D.O

10. Heechul (Super Junior)

Heechul is always teased about being a huge player, with many past girlfriends, and he rarely talks about his feelings with breakups; his heartbreak comes from his interactions with friends. He said once on an episode of The TiTaeSoo that he feels heartbroken when he sees Taeyeon struggle.

“There are times when I feel heartbroken when I see Taeyeon pretending to be strong. She has so much weight to carry on her shoulders but I feel proud of her when I see her taking care of others without showing any signs of struggling. When I was struggling, she also comforted me by my side. So I’m always thankful.” — Heechul

11. Lay (EXO)

When Lay appeared on variety show Go Fighting! in 2015, a variety show where the cast members complete various missions, Lay and the other members were given the task of getting the second highest number of gold bars. Although it was an individual mission, near the beginning of the show, Lay formed an alliance with Sun Honglei, who eventually betrayed Lay by stealing his gold bars and leaving him without money or transport. Lay reacted emotionally, saying he trusted Sun Honglei and was heartbroken and betrayed by his hyung.

“I had mixed feelings during that day. At the beginning, I trusted Honglei hyung very much, but things happened later on. At the end, when he came to apologize to me, my heart actually already accepted the apology, but I really couldn’t accept taking the case [of gold bars] back. I didn’t know how to trust him again, and I was too afraid to trust again. My heart felt really conflicted. From the beginning of the show, I wished to gain everyone’s trust, but at the end, when I couldn’t even trust someone who came to me with an apology, I actually cried as well. At that time, I was thinking that Honglei hyung was really my idol. He was very perfect and was a hyung that I trusted very much.” — Lay

12. Chanhyuk (Akdong Musician)

Akdong Musician’s Chanhyuk revealed that the song “Last Goodbye” was inspired by a real breakup and that he even cried while writing the song. Soohyun confirmed the story, saying she came across him sobbing his heart out while playing the guitar.

“I saw it myself. I heard someone crying while I was heading to the bathroom. When I looked, Lee Chanhyuk was crying as he played the guitar.”  — Soohyun
