5 Historic Moments In K-Pop That Newer Fans Might Not Know About

These moments were huge when they happened.

As the K-Pop fanbase grows larger and larger every day, some newer fans might not know about these historic moments which were earth-shattering when they happened.

1. 2NE1 reuniting at the 2015 MAMAs

By December 2015, 2NE1 hadn’t been seen together in almost a year and because of CL’s growing status overseas, Blackjacks everywhere were worried that this might be the end for the group.

CL was originally scheduled to perform solo at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards. CL started to perform her solo song “Hello Bitches” but the song ended prematurely and the arena went dark. Suddenly, the members of 2NE1 started to rise from the ground to a roaring crowd. The group then performed “Fire” and “I Am The Best” as everyone in the arena collectively went nuts.

2NE1 would eventually officially disband in 2016 but Blackjacks are glad they got this one last moment with the girls… or so they thought.

At Coachella 2022, CL brought together the 2NE1 members again for another reunion performance!

2. Girl’s Generation’s “Black Ocean”

Girl’s Generation were just a year into their careers in 2008 and they were scheduled to appear at Dream Concert, one of the biggest annual K-Pop events at the time. During their 10 minute set, the crowd switched off their lightsticks and chanted “Wonder Girls” in what became one of the most infamous events ever in K-Pop.

The story had a happy ending, however. Girls Generation came back to Dream Concert in 2013 as the most popular girl group in Korea. The cheers were so deafening that you can barely hear the girls sing and everyone in the crowd was wielding a pink lightstick in support of the girls. Their entire performance is worth watching just to hear how crazy the audience was for them.

3. G-Dragon dissing the award show he was performing on

G-Dragon appeared on the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2014 and he opened with a scathing rap that bashed Mnet and the award show itself.

G-Dragon really didn’t hold anything back. During his rap, he referenced that almost every big group gets an award automatically during the MAMAs.

It’s been a while MAMA, seems like you’re giving out big awards so there won’t be a fight.
I’m big enough that i’m full just by looking at it so give the kids some food.

4. SBS Friendship Project

At the 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun, various idol groups came together and sang a song for charity in a very rare coming together. Artists like IUEXO, 2NE1, Girl’s Generation, Apink, 4Minute and more participated in this historic event.

It would be very cool to see this with the current lineup of idols. You can watch the whole video below:

5. Hyunseung and HyunA’s Kiss at the 2011 MAMAs

The MAMAs are coming up a lot in this list. In 2011, there weren’t many groups doing more sexy and risque concepts which is what made Trouble Maker, the duo of HyunA and Hyunseung, unique. At the climax of their performance at the 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards they kissed one another causing the crowd to scream out in shock.

This event created a huge buzz at the time and they ended up repeating it at the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards.
