If you ever had to cook rice, whether in a pot or a rice cooker, you know that it’s a bit of a science to getting it right. Here are some tried and true ways to getting you some of the best rice you’ve ever had.

1. The Finger Method

This method consists of pouring the rice into the pot and placing your index finger so that it is touching the surface of the rice. Then you add water up to your first knuckle and voila, you’ve got the best water to rice ratio.

2. The Knuckle Method

Not to be confused with the first finger method, as it differs slightly. In this method, you place your palm on the rice and as you fill the water and stop when it covers your knuckles. This is a popular method amongst Koreans.

3. Soaking The Rice

In Japan, they say it’s essential to soak the rice in water for at least 30 minutes before cooking so that the rice can absorb all the moisture it lost while being processed. That way, when you cook it you will end up with the perfect fluffy rice.

4. Boil Jasmine Rice Uncovered

Rice should always be cooked covered but Jasmine rice is the exception. You essentially boil the rice uncovered and then in very low heat you cover it and let it cook by the steam.
