BTS’s Suga Explains The Difference Between “Suga” And “Agust D”

He talked about the similarities and differences between his alter egos.

Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? Wait, let’s try that again. Would a rapper by any other name be as lit?

Rapper Min Yoongi goes by two stage names: Suga for his group work with BTS, and Agust D for his solo releases. Names aside though, what are the differences between these alter egos?

On May 22, Agust D came back with D-2his first mixtape since 2016, and a new music video that’s full of surprises. Ahead of its release, Suga connected with TIME magazine to talk about the themes and inspirations behind his ten new songs.

When asked to share the differences and similarities between Suga and Agust D, he revealed that it all comes down to personal expression.

Suga said, “The difference is that there is a lot more that I can openly express and that I can show a more raw side to myself [with Agust D]. What’s similar is that both sing of dreams and hope.”

D-2 has just been released, but already it is rising on the charts and trending worldwide. Watch the music video for its title track, “Daechwita” here:
