TXT’s Hueningkai Tried A New Singing Technique To Make His Voice Sound Raspier—Here’s Why

“It’s a new challenge.”

TXT‘s Hueningkai recently participated in an edgy pictorial for GQ Korea along with an accompanying interview!

In his interview, Hueningkai was asked several questions and many regarded his journey toward becoming an idol! Before debuting, Hueningkai was in a band with his friends in middle school and he took on the role of lead vocalist.

Q: Hueningkai started as a frontman (lead vocalist) right? I heard that you were in charge of vocals in the band you made in middle school.

I had a friend who played guitar well. One day, the idea of making a band was brought up so started one with the five of us. Actually, I thought I’d be playing the drums.

Although he and his band weren’t at the level as TXT is today, Hueningkai shared that he learned a lot from the experience.

Q: Either way, you must’ve learned a lot (being in a band) with your friends.

Definitely. Communication in the band is very important. We have to match each other. Once, I had a song I was practicing and suddenly changed the song in the middle. We were really stuck but I was like, ‘We can do it!’ We focused and encouraged each other. We were able to pull off the new song in just a few days.

As for new things he’s learning, Hueningkai mentioned that he has recently tried a new singing technique! To convey a more heartbroken emotion, Hueningkai shared he tried to use a more raspy vocal technique.

Yes, I tried to scratch my voice and sing roughly so that you can feel the heartache while listening. It’s a new challenge, but I think I’ve succeeded. It was really fun while I sang it too. These days, I’m thinking about how I can make my voice more immersive.

Hueningkai also commented that he’s been trying to find a healthier way to sing after long periods of continuous singing.

My throat gets tired when I keep singing, so I’m looking for a more comfortable way to sing so that I don’t use too much force.
