GOT7‘s Mark Tuan is currently pursuing his solo music, and with that comes a whole new perspective around what he wants to show fans.
Mark just dropped his latest song, “save me,” a move that wouldn’t have happened if he had stopped making music, something he considered after moving back to the US from Korea last year. Still, he’s glad for the new creative freedom his solo career has allowed him.
After releasing several singles, what fans want next is an album. With a clip of “save me” and a message to check it out, Mark also posted a sneaky little note to his Instagram that said, “p.s…. albums done🤫” It looks like fans will have their wish come true, hopefully, soon.
As part of his recent promotions, Mark landed the cover of Flaunt Magazine‘s 180th issue and spoke about his music and what he’s looking forward to in this new era. Along with a stunning photo shoot, came wise words about the music industry and his place in it.
One of the things he talked about was the way he interacts with fans. Mark’s relationship with his fans is similar to that of many K-Pop artists. It’s largely interactive.
I joke around a lot with our fans—I think it is important that I don’t come off too strong. You know, I’m not like, ‘Oh, I’m not gonna do that,’ if they request a hairstyle change. I like to play around with them, I think that’s just my personality.
Sometimes lines are crossed, but usually the relationship is playful.
Sometimes they say weird things, and you gotta call them out for it. They like to make fun of me sometimes—it’s a playful relationship with fans.
Coming from a K-Pop background, Mark is trying to shift how people view idols. Mark hopes that through his new music, he can show that idols are more than how their label may portray them.
For K-Pop artists, people see the good side of things, which is what the label wants to portray, and how they want people to view us. I hope that after people listen to my album, they get a different perspective about idols.
Idols are people too.
We do have these thoughts, and we do go through these emotions and these feelings that normal people do. I just hope that a lot of people will be more open-minded and understand their idols a lot better.
For Mark, his music is a chance to be honest about his thoughts.
Being able to tell my story through my songs, and through my lyrics, is a lot easier for me to open up and let people know how I really feel. We can have fun making music, just writing about whatever inspires us, but for right now, that’s where my head is and I just wanted to get my story out there.
